ReSound Sensia announced: AI designed to follow the voice you choose


ReSound’s latest premium RIE combines real-time sound analysis, four-microphone focus and AI noise reduction to help in busy conversations.

ReSound has announced Sensia, a new premium family of hearing aids built around one of the most common frustrations described by people with hearing loss: being able to hear that several people are talking, but struggling to follow the particular person they want to hear.

The headline is not simply that Sensia contains artificial intelligence. Its more interesting claim is that the hearing aids are designed to give priority to speech coming from the direction the wearer is facing, rather than automatically assuming that the loudest nearby voice must be the important one.

The loudest person is not always the person you want to hear

Imagine sitting at a table in a busy restaurant. You are looking towards the person opposite you, but someone beside you is speaking more loudly.

Noise reduction can make the environment more comfortable, while directional microphones can improve speech from a particular area. The difficulty is deciding which voice the hearing aids should support when several people are speaking at once.

ReSound Sensia uses the direction the wearer is facing as an indication of attention. Turn towards the person you want to hear and the system is designed to concentrate more strongly on speech coming from in front, while making competing conversations and background noise less intrusive.

It is not reading someone’s mind or tracking their eyes. It is using head direction as a practical clue about which conversation may matter most.

How does ReSound Sensia work?

The flagship Sensia system is called Intelligent All-Around. It coordinates three different technologies rather than relying on one AI noise-reduction feature.

First, AcoustIQ continually analyses the surrounding sound and decides which hearing-aid settings should be active.

Second, a synchronised four-microphone directional system creates a narrow, forward-facing area of focus. This is intended to give greater prominence to the speaker the wearer has turned towards.

Third, deep neural network denoising reduces competing sound while attempting to keep the selected speech clear and natural. ReSound says these systems can operate together automatically when Sensia detects a sufficiently challenging speech-in-noise situation.

The practical goal is straightforward: less time changing programmes in an app and more automatic assistance when a conversation becomes difficult.

How is Sensia different from ReSound Vivia?

ReSound Vivia already included a dedicated deep neural network processor. However, its strongest DNN-based assistance was accessed through a separate hearing-in-noise programme.

Sensia uses substantially related processing technology, but changes how the hearing aids classify the surroundings and decide when to activate it. In the top Sensia 9 microRIE, the DNN noise reduction and four-microphone focus can be brought into the main automatic programme without the wearer manually selecting a different setting.

That may prove more meaningful in everyday use than simply adding another processing feature. Advanced technology offers limited benefit when a wearer has to recognise the problem, find their phone and select the appropriate programme before it becomes active.

An important difference between Sensia models

ReSound Sensia is the name of an entire hearing-aid family, and not every Sensia model contains the same processing.

ReSound’s professional information states that the complete Intelligent All-Around system is available at Technology Level 9 in the rechargeable microRIE. Sensia 7 also receives DNN-based noise reduction, but HearingTracker reports that it is accessed through a manually selected hearing-in-noise programme rather than the fully automatic arrangement provided by Sensia 9.

AcoustIQ sound analysis and ReSound’s four-microphone directional strategies are available more widely across the range, but the presence of the Sensia name alone does not mean that every style or technology level includes the complete flagship system.

Anyone considering Sensia because of its automatic AI processing should therefore confirm the exact model and technology level being recommended.

What evidence has ReSound published?

ReSound has published several strong performance claims for the new platform.

Its professional material reports that AcoustIQ achieved 88% greater accuracy in sound classification and feature engagement than the closest compared premium product. ReSound also reports that 83% of test users achieved superior speech clarity in noise with its four-microphone system compared with other premium solutions.

Testing involving researchers at Hörzentrum Oldenburg examined whether Sensia could make the intended forward-facing speaker more audible when other voices were present. ReSound reports that its system produced the best audibility of the intended speaker for 80% of users in the relevant comparisons.

Those figures should still be described as ReSound’s launch evidence, rather than treated as a final verdict on the product.

HearingTracker notes that the intended-speaker study measured which talker was most audible. It was not a conventional speech-recognition test measuring how many additional words a wearer could correctly understand. HearingTracker and its HearAdvisor laboratory had also not formally evaluated Sensia independently when the product was announced.

The research supports the explanation of what Sensia is trying to do. Individual benefit, sound quality and comfort will still need to be established through appropriate assessment, fitting and everyday use.

ReSound Sensia styles and battery options

The Sensia family includes a rechargeable microRIE, RIE models using size 312 or size 13 disposable batteries, and a range of custom-made in-the-ear hearing aids.

ReSound describes the rechargeable microRIE as the world’s smallest AI-powered RIE and says it is approximately 6% smaller than its closest competitor. This comparison is based on GN’s proprietary product data, so it is best presented as a manufacturer claim rather than an independently established title.

The rechargeable microRIE is advertised with up to 24 hours of battery life, including streaming. Actual battery duration will depend on streaming, wireless use, the listening environment, battery condition and how frequently intensive processing is activated.

The wider family also includes custom rechargeable ITC and ITE models, a non-wireless CIC option, CROS products for single-sided hearing loss and dedicated bimodal options designed for use alongside compatible Cochlear Nucleus sound processors.

Bluetooth LE Audio and Auracast

Sensia supports Bluetooth Low Energy Audio and Auracast broadcast audio on compatible models.

Auracast allows compatible hearing aids to receive sound broadcast by televisions, public venues and other enabled systems. Available broadcasts can be found through the ReSound Smart 3D app, while ReSound’s TV-Streamer+ and Multi-Mic+ provide additional options for televisions and difficult listening environments. Bluetooth availability varies by style, with the non-wireless CIC excluded.

This is functional Auracast support rather than a product described only as being ready for a possible future update.

When will ReSound Sensia be available in the UK?

ReSound announced initial availability in the United States, Germany and Austria from 20 August 2026, with further markets expected to follow.

At the time of writing, a confirmed UK release date and UK pricing had not been published. This article will be updated when the UK models, technology levels and launch arrangements are confirmed.

Our first view

Sensia addresses a genuine difficulty. In a room containing several voices, the speech someone wants to follow is not necessarily the loudest speech reaching their hearing aids.

Using the direction a person naturally faces is a logical way to help identify their intended conversation. The addition of automatic DNN processing may also reduce the need to reach for an app whenever the listening environment becomes more demanding.

There will still be practical questions to answer. The strongest assistance depends on facing the speaker, so the experience may differ in rapidly moving group conversations, when someone is speaking from the side, or for a wearer who cannot turn easily. We will also want to know how smoothly the system changes modes and whether speech remains natural when the wearer moves their head.

Sensia is therefore an interesting development, but the correct recommendation cannot be made from an AI claim, a percentage or the size of the hearing aid alone. Hearing levels, speech understanding, listening priorities, physical handling, connectivity and the quality of the fitting remain just as important.
