If you have started looking into hearing aids, you have probably noticed the same handful of names coming up again and again. It can be hard to know whether the brand on the box really matters, or whether it is mostly marketing.
As an independent, family-run clinic in Wickersley, we are not tied to any one manufacturer. We fit all seven of the leading hearing aid brands, which means our job is simply to match the right technology to your ears, your lifestyle and your budget. Here is how that works.
Why does being independent make a difference?
Some high-street chains and manufacturer-owned clinics only offer one or two brands, often their own. There is nothing wrong with those products, but it does narrow the choice.
Because we are independent and HCPC-registered members of the British Society of Hearing Aid Audiologists (BSHAA), we can recommend whatever genuinely suits you. If two brands would do the job equally well, we will tell you that too. You can read more about the range on our hearing aids page.
Who are the seven brands, and what is each known for?
All seven are excellent manufacturers with long track records. They tend to differ in emphasis rather than quality, and each has its own way of processing sound.
- Widex: often chosen by people who care about natural, clear sound, and popular with musicians and music lovers.
- Phonak: known for strong connectivity, robust rechargeable models and a wide range that includes powerful aids for more significant hearing loss.
- Signia: recognised for discreet styling and clever processing of your own voice, which some people find takes less getting used to.
- Starkey: has pushed hard on smart features, including fall detection and activity tracking built into some models.
- Oticon: focuses on giving the brain access to the full sound scene rather than narrowing to a single speaker, which many people find comfortable in busy rooms.
- ReSound: well regarded for natural sound and reliable streaming to phones and other devices.
- Unitron: offers flexible upgrade paths and good value, with the option to try a level of technology and step up later.
These are broad strokes. In practice the lines blur, and the best brand for your neighbour may not be the best for you.
How do we actually choose between them?
The brand is one of the last decisions we make, not the first. We start with you. A typical fitting follows a few steps:
- Your hearing. A full assessment shows the exact shape of your hearing loss. Some brands handle certain patterns particularly well.
- Your life. Someone who spends evenings in noisy restaurants needs something different from someone who mainly wants to follow the television and one-to-one chats.
- Your hands and eyes. Dexterity and eyesight matter. Rechargeable aids suit people who struggle with tiny batteries, and certain styles are simply easier to handle.
- Your ears themselves. The size and shape of your ear canal can rule some styles in or out.
- Connectivity. If you want to stream calls, music or the television, some brands pair more smoothly with your particular phone.
Only once we understand all of that do we suggest one or two brands that fit the picture. If you would like to know what an appointment involves before you commit, our first visit page walks you through it.
Does the brand matter more than the person fitting it?
Honestly, no. A mid-range aid set up carefully by an experienced audiologist will usually outperform a top-of-the-range aid left on a generic setting. The fitting, the fine-tuning over the following weeks and the aftercare matter more than the logo.
That is why we do not push the newest or most expensive option as a matter of course. Sometimes the right answer is a modest aid, well fitted. Occasionally, after an assessment, the right answer is that you do not need hearing aids yet at all, and we are happy to say so.
What if I still cannot decide?
You do not have to. That is our job, and there is no pressure. We will explain the shortlist in plain language, let you handle the different styles, and often let you hear the difference for yourself. Many brands also offer trial periods, so you can live with a choice before you settle on it.
