When people start looking into hearing aids, they usually ask which one is best. It is a fair question, but it is not the first one worth asking. The first is who you are buying from, because that quietly shapes everything that follows: the advice you get, the choice you are offered, and who looks after you afterwards.
At Wickersley Audiology we are independent and family-run, and for the people we see across Rotherham that turns out to matter more than most expect. Here is what independence really means, in plain terms.
What does being independent actually mean?
Independent means we are not owned by, or tied to, any hearing aid manufacturer or national chain. There is no head office handing us a monthly sales target, and no brand we are told to steer you towards regardless of whether it suits you. We answer to our patients, not to a shareholder or a supplier.
That is not a small distinction. Some high-street hearing providers are owned by the very companies that make the hearing aids they sell, which can narrow what you are shown. We are HCPC-registered and members of the British Society of Hearing Aid Audiologists (BSHAA), and our loyalty sits with the person in the chair.
Why does fitting every major brand matter?
No single manufacturer makes the best hearing aid for everyone. Each brand has genuine strengths, and the right choice depends on your hearing, your ears, your lifestyle, how good you are with small buttons, and what you actually need day to day. Being independent means we fit all seven of the leading brands:
- Widex, Phonak, Signia, Starkey, Oticon, ReSound and Unitron.
Because we sit outside all of them, we can compare like for like and recommend whichever genuinely fits you best. A keen gardener who is out in the wind all day has different needs from someone who mostly wants to follow conversation at family dinners or hear the television clearly. Someone with arthritis in their fingers may do far better with a rechargeable model than one that needs tiny batteries changed. We can weigh all of that up honestly, then match it to the technology that suits. You can read more about the options and how a fitting works on our hearing aids page.
Who will you actually be dealing with?
With an independent local practice, you tend to see the same faces every time. There is real value in that. The audiologist who tested your hearing is the one who fits your aids, and the one you come back to when something needs adjusting a few months later. They remember you, your history, and what you told them last time.
Aftercare is where this really shows. A hearing aid is not a one-off purchase you take home and forget. It needs fine-tuning, the occasional clean, and adjusting as your hearing changes over the years. Because we are rooted here rather than passing through, we are still here when you need us. If you would like a sense of how that feels for the people we look after, our patient reviews tell the story better than we can.
Does independent mean pushy or expensive?
Quite the opposite, in our experience. Without a sales quota to hit, there is no reason for us to talk you into more than you need. We would far rather you left with the right hearing aid, or occasionally with none at all, than with the most expensive option on the shelf.
That honesty runs both ways. If a simpler, lower-cost model does everything you need, we will say so. If your difficulty turns out to be earwax rather than hearing loss, we will tell you that too, and sort it with gentle microsuction rather than sell you something you do not require. Good advice you can trust tends to cost you less over time, not more.
What if you are not sure you need hearing aids yet?
You might not, and that is a perfectly good outcome. Plenty of people come in worried and leave reassured. If you are only starting to wonder whether your hearing has changed, a quick, no-pressure look is a sensible first step. Our free online hearing check takes a couple of minutes at home, and if it flags anything you can book a proper assessment. There is no obligation and no hard sell at any stage, as our first visit page explains.
If you would like an honest, unhurried opinion from people whose only job is to look after your hearing, book a hearing-aid consultation or call us on 01709 437250. We are always happy to talk it through first.
