It is one of the questions we are asked most often at our clinic in Wickersley: "Do I need to see my GP first before I can get my hearing tested?" It is a fair thing to wonder. Most of us are used to the idea that the doctor is the front door to everything else in healthcare.
The short answer is no, you do not need a GP referral for a private hearing test. You can book directly with an independent audiologist, no letter and no waiting for permission. But the NHS route works a little differently, so it is worth understanding both so you can choose what suits you.
So do you actually need a referral?
For a private hearing test, no. There is no referral, no gatekeeper and no cost to you for the assessment itself. You ring up or book online and come in when you are ready. That is the whole process.
For an NHS hearing test, the usual first step is your GP. They will take a look in your ears, rule out something simple such as a build-up of wax, and if they feel a full assessment would help, they will refer you to an NHS audiology department. In some parts of England you can now refer yourself to NHS audiology without going through the GP at all, but this varies from place to place, so it is worth asking at your surgery what is available locally.
How does the NHS route work?
The NHS provides a genuinely good hearing service, and it is free at the point of use. If you go down this route, here is roughly what to expect:
- You see your GP, who checks your ears and takes a short history.
- If needed, they refer you to your local NHS audiology clinic.
- You are seen for a hearing test, and if hearing aids would help, they are provided on loan along with batteries and servicing.
The main thing to be aware of is that waiting times vary from area to area, and in some places the wait between referral and appointment can be several weeks or more. The choice of hearing aid is also more limited than in the private sector. None of that makes it the wrong choice, and for many people it is exactly right. It just helps to know what you are choosing between.
How does a private hearing test work?
Booking privately simply means you come to us directly. Your first appointment is a full, unhurried assessment: we talk through your history and the situations you find tricky, look inside your ears, and carry out a proper hearing test. If there is wax in the way, we can gently remove it with microsuction so we can see clearly and test accurately.
Because we are independent, we are not tied to any one manufacturer. If it turns out that hearing aids would help you, we can fit any of the seven leading brands and recommend purely on what suits your ears, your lifestyle and your budget. When should you see your GP first anyway?
There are a few situations where a doctor really should be your first port of call, whichever route you eventually take. Please contact your GP, or NHS 111, promptly if you notice any of the following:
- Hearing that drops suddenly, especially in one ear. Sudden hearing loss should be treated as urgent and seen the same day.
- Ear pain, or fluid or discharge coming from the ear.
- Ringing or buzzing in one ear only, or that comes on suddenly.
- Dizziness or a spinning sensation alongside the hearing change.
These can point to something that needs medical treatment rather than a hearing aid, and getting them checked quickly matters. We will always say the same if you come to us with them first.
